8 month old sleep regression occurs when a baby that has been sleeping well enough at night starts to have a poor sleeping pattern. This can include frequent walking at night, fighting sleep, being fussy during bedtime, or taking shorter naps.
Sleep regression at this age is majorly related to physical and mental growth and other skills they are learning. Some of the major things that contribute to sleep regression for 8 months old are;
Separation anxiety
This mainly occurs because they don’t want to be left in the room alone by the parent or the caregiver especially when being put in the crib during nap time.
Talking
Most babies start babbling words or expressing themselves during this stage, when you ignore them, it may result in sleep regression.
Crawling
This is a form of growth and when they learn how to do it, they are always itchy to practice more especially at night which might affect their sleep pattern.
Some of the signs that an 8-month old is having a hard time during nap time are;
When they are walking more frequently at night than usual, when they become restless and it’s hard to put them to sleep, when they act clingy every time when you are around maybe you leave the house during the day for work. Another sign is when a baby is cranky its means that they are not getting enough sleep even during the day because at this stage they should be sleeping for more hours including day naps.
Some of the ways that may help one manage sleep regression in 8 months are;
One should try sleep training especially if they had tried and it worked before because this stage does not last for a long time. Another way of managing sleep regression is coming up with a routine of sleep and wake up time and then stick to it.
Practice separation whereby you shortly leave them so that they can know even if you are not around, you will definitely come back. Another way that can help manage sleep regression is to let your baby see you at night before they sleep or when they wake up because this can help them calm down and sleep well. Another way is by being patient with your baby because sleep regression is not permanent.
When you realize that you 8 months is going through a sleep regression, taking turns with your partner or caregiver is really helpful.
