Every type of building has its own special codes that need to be allowed for in its design. A restaurant, for example, needs to allow for easy maintenance, disposal of waste, and cooking while keeping every surface clean just as an office building needs to keep in mind every aspect of the Americans with Disabilities Act in order to ensure that it can handle every possible type of employee. A childcare center has just as many rules as the others in order to ensure the safety and security of its young charges; childcare design can be challenging, especially when allowing for the problems of the year in which it is built. Nonetheless, these challenges are usually met if not exceeded.

The Problems

Childcare design has to keep in mind several different issues. The first is that it has to meet the exacting codes of the Americans with Disabilities Act; there are literally dozens of different specifications that need to be met in order for the building to meet the code, from ramps to water fountain heights, all designed to meet the needs of almost any person who could use the facility. The building must also be designed with safety in mind, more so than most buildings; the curiosity of children, as well as their inexperience, must be allowed for in the design. Lastly, the building must be easy to clean and maintain, especially given that children are not only skilled at creating messes but for purposes of hygiene as well.

The Design Stage

With those issues in mind, the designer has an almost herculean task before him. Childcare design starts with a simple design that is carefully drawn out onto a plan, and then that plan is converted to digital plans; this allows the designer to confirm that the design will work. Odds are that he will also be working with a crew that includes those that will be using the building when it has actually been built so as to eliminate the potential surprises and problems once it has been built. All of these details will be allowed for in the design.

Childcare design can be a difficult process. However, with the design team working together all of the issues can be allowed for, from safety to security to even potential hygiene issues. With that many eyes looking at the project a number of mistakes can be avoided, creating the best potential environment for children.
