Removing scratches from glass isn’t that straightforward. And if the scratches are rough, very old, or quite pronounced, things become even more complicated. However, you can lessen or remove these imperfections.
Safety should always be the priority when you’re trying to remove glass scratches. In other words, deep cracks and scratches must be carefully handled. Also, you should know that tempered or safety glass is made to break under specific scenarios. Therefore, be sure of not applying too much or excessive pressure while buffing such glass types. In certain cases, professional assistance could be sought.
Start the glass scratch removal process by buffing the glass with a polishing or buffing compound. Once buffed, the glass should be washed and left to dry. To remove the scratches without damaging the glass further, choose a buffing or polishing agent that can be safely used with glass. This could be jeweler’s rouge, a polishing compound, or gel-based toothpaste.
Don’t use a polishing cream with abrasive traits as it could cause further damage. Apply the compound using a buffing pad. Rub it over the damaged region in circular motions and be wary of the level of pressure being constantly applied. For large or deep scratches, you may use an automated buffer that’s set to work at medium speed.
Once the glass has been buffed for some minutes, check if the scratches or cracks are losing ground. Apply compound as per requirement and keep buffing until all the scratches have been removed. In certain cases, the scratches would not be visible anymore. In other scenarios, their appearance would be less pronounced, though not completely removed.
After this scratch removal method has been successfully attempted, mix two portions of ammonia with three portions of water and use the blend to clean the glass completely. This would offer additional shine and help enhance the glass’ appearance. Rinse the glass and dry its surface using a ling-free rag or towel.
At times, the scratches from the glass would just not go. Generally, if you can feel the scratches when you run your fingernails over them, those scratches cannot be buffed away. Such cracks would require professional help, or you may have to remove and replace the glass with a new one.
Remember, it’s not worth repairing a glass that already has some deep grooves. Those scratches would have compromised the integrity of the glass, which means the glass would give up or cease to be usable sooner rather than later if continuously used. Not to mention, using weakened glass could lead to sudden breakage and injure people around.
