Netball was first played in England. A idea came about when women had a desire to play basketball. They did not really have resources so they tied a plastic packet to the end of a stick and began playing this game that is now known as netball. It was officially recognised as a sport in the year 1901. However netball uniforms have drastically evolved since the first ones used in the year 1901. While netball was thoroughly enjoyed by woman, playing the game in the attire of that day was quite difficult. This is basically when woman decided to create their own netball uniform. The uniforms that were created where ideal for young woman who needed flexibility and ease of movement while playing the game. Provided more flexibility than the ankle length dresses or floor-length dresses that were currently being used or initially being used.
The first netball uniforms were pleated skirts or tunics that ended below the knee and cotton shirts with stiff collars like men’s. The Uniforms were finalized with stockings which not only complete the look but also kept their feet and legs warm. The uniforms were basically not altered in any way for the next 30 years however, at this point in time it was also agreed that the stuff shirts be replaced with blouses pleated netball skirts and matching sports shoes and rumours as well. Yes after that the uniform was altered yet again ,as it was a trend in that time to have short skirts, so to the netball skirts became shorter as well. Bloomers were replaced with sports shorts and cotton socks were the order of the day.
It was more than 10 years later before the uniforms could be altered again. This time the tunics and pleated skirts were replaced with sport shorts. The blouses were also replaced with polos. A bib was added which basically made it easier for the audience and supporters to identify one player from another. If this changes already weren’t enough, over the next three decades the uniforms underwent further changes. Initially the shorts became tighter and shorter before becoming looser. Thereafter during the 1990s the uniforms actually became over-sized.
So as you can see netball has had an extremely interesting history. Not only were women determined to play the game but they were also determined to play the game comfortably. The netball uniforms that people know and see daily are much more comfortable today than they were at first. So far players find it extremely comfortable to play the game In their current uniforms, so as far as alterations are concerned it seems like none of them will be made soon.
