People use wigs for various reasons, but whatever it is, the first step to getting one is buying it. Here are some tips to consider to make sure you buy the proper wig and use it correctly.
When choosing a wig, take note of its size (or how your head would look like when wearing that cap). You can do this by using a fit test. Choose your wig, place it against your head, and tap the top of it to make sure that it is not too tight or loose. The fit must be comfortable but not so lose the wig will slip off easily. It should also not be too tight that you get headaches after wearing it for a long time.
If you want your wig to look as natural as possible, it is best that you choose a color close to your natural hair color or, instead, very light blonde or silver. If not, then there are a lot of colors available for you to choose from. Just make sure the color will go well with your skin tone.
Wigs are usually sold by weight instead of length, so if you have a certain look in mind or just want to try something new, you should pay more attention to the weight than the size. Note that bob-style wigs can be lighter while long ones can be heavier.
When buying from websites, it is best that you avoid buying wigs with a shiny sheen. The sheen may be an indication that the wig was made cheaply and may easily tangle or shed.
If your choice of style is not available in your selected color, it is recommended to pick a different color instead of dyeing the wig yourself. Wig dyes are not the same as hair dye. Wig dyes are less effective and will continuously damage your wig.
You should avoid combing your wig with a regular brush, especially if it is made of synthetic fibers. You can use special wig combs instead. If you want to remove tangles yourself, use wire-toothed combs instead.
Make sure you read the washing instructions carefully before washing your wig to avoid damaging it. You should also take note of which products are safe to use on your wig. Regular shampoo is generally okay, but you can try using baby shampoo or clarifying shampoo instead if not listed in the instructions. Make sure that whatever product you use is formulated for synthetic fibers.
When you’re not wearing your wig, you should keep it in a cupboard or container to prevent it from getting dirty and tangled. You can also use wig caps or hair nets to further protect them. It is recommended that wigs be stored on stands with the wefts facing upward to avoid matting.
