In the game of basketball, the aim is to score goals or get more points. Technically, a goal is a “basket”. This simply means throwing the ball through the hoop. The team with the most points wins the game and this is why each team tries to outscore the other. Considering the fact that you need to “score goals” to win the match, it pays to practice basketball goals. Below are some things you should teach your players if you are a basketball coach.
Three-Pointers
Every smart coach should teach his or her players three-pointer skills. In basketball, a 3-pointer is a field game scored from beyond the three-point line. This is worth three points as compared to the normal two points usually awarded for field goals within the 3-point line. Three-pointers are smart ways to rack up points because if your players can hit 3-pointers, you are likely to win the game.
Free Throws
This is one smart way to rack up points easily. A free throw is an opportunity given to a player on one team to score after a foul by a player on the opposing team. In this case, the player making the throws (two throws) stands on the 15-foot line and makes two scoring attempts. Each attempt is worth one point and if the two attempts go through the hoop, the team gets two points.
Bank Shot
Some practice basketball goals specialize in the bank shop so smart coaches should teach players how to perfect the bank shot skill. A bank shot occurs when the player with the ball bounces the ball off the backboard and straight into the hoop. This skill is particularly useful in cases where opposing players are trying to stop the attacking player from getting the basket.
Fast Break
The advantage of this move is that it usually results in scoring opportunities. A fast break is an offensive move where one team attempts to score quickly after a steal, a rebound or a blocked shot. This move works best when one team’s attack breaks down suddenly. This means the other team can capitalize on the situation and score.
Lay-Up
In basketball terminology, a lay-up means you take this shot close to the hoop when you are moving towards the basket. The great thing about this move is that you take the defenders in the opposing team by surprise and it frequently results in a goal.
Final Word
Basketball is all about getting the ball though the hoop. Teach your players the skills discussed above and they will win matches for you.
