Tips For Traveling With A Yoga Mat

You don’t have to sacrifice your fitness when you travel. You can still do a lot of exercises at your destination including running outside to explore the new place. If the weather and other factors prevent this, then you can work out inside of your hotel room instead. Bring items such as TRX straps with a door mount, a jumping rope, resistance bands, or a 3mm yoga mat.

The last one is particularly handy and versatile. Just lay it on the floor and you will be able to perform not just yoga but all push-ups, bridges, planks, crunches, and other exercises. You can also use your mat as a bed cover, a picnic mat, or as cushion when waiting at the airport. Consider the following tips for traveling with a yoga mat:

A Thin and Short Mat for Less Bulk

Whenever possible, you should get a mat that is thinner than average so that you can reduce the bulk and weight. A 3mm yoga mat will be perfect for this since it is light yet still supportive. If you find that you need more cushioning, fold it around the area where you require thicker padding. Go for a short mat if you can tolerate it. You only really need something that covers your height. Some minimalists will even cut their mats for travel but you don’t need to go that far. The goal is to make it less of a burden to carry and ensure that it can fit in overhead compartments.

Packing Options with a Backpack

if you are going to travel with a backpack, then check whether there are straps at the sides or at the bottom that you can use to secure the mat outside. This is great for rolled mats since you can have easy access while freeing up interior space for clothes and other gear. Mats are waterproof and durable anyway so there should be no worries about damage. If you prefer to pack the rolled mat inside, then you need a tall backpack. An alternative would be to fold the mat and place it at the bottom or at the back.

Wash and Wipe to Prevent Odors

Be sure to wash the mat before packing it so that it won’t develop odors that can latch onto other items. Wipe it with disinfectant after every use as well to remove sweat stains and prevent the growth of bacteria.
