Things To Check When Buying A Bathtub Repair Kit

A bathtub repair kit can save you a lot of money by making it possible to solve a common problem by yourself. Instead of paying a handyman for the job or buying a brand new tub, simply get a kit and patch things up until it looks brand new again. You might be surprised at how easy it is even if you may not be a DIY expert. Make sure that you consider the following when you are buying a kit:

Compatibility to Bathtub Material

Bathtubs are made from different materials and these kits are meant to a specific type. You need to know what you are dealing with so that you can purchase the correct product. Common options include porcelain, acrylic, fiberglass, enameled cast iron, and cast polymer. If you aren’t sure, then you can inspect their surfaces to look for telltale signs. You can also give them a slight knock, listen to the sound, and feel the texture. Some are more durable then others. Prices also vary widely between each one. Fiberglass tends to be the cheapest while cast iron is among the most expensive.

Inclusion of Paints and Finishes

Check the contents of the kit just to be sure. You want the finished spot to look virtually identical to the rest of the tub with no evidence that it has just undergone repair. This means sanding the resin until completely smooth, painting it over to get the right hue, and applying a get coat or other type of finishing to bring back that shiny glow. Some kits include this while others will require that you get them separately. Whites are easy to find but rare colors will give you some difficulties.

Inclusion of Surface Prep Tools

While you’re at it, check if these have surface preparation tools as well. It’s great if these are included but you should be able to get some at a low cost otherwise. These may include a soft cloth, sand paper, a brush, and other things that you might need to use for cleaning.

Touch-up or Repair Kit

Do check whether you have gotten a touch-up kit or a repair kit. The former is great for minor scrapes and blemishes. In some cases, neglecting these will not only lead to an unsightly tub. You might also expect corrosion and other unwanted side effects. However, they can only deal with shallow issues. You will need a bathtub repair kit for actual cracks and small holes.
