Facial Recognition: All You Need To Know

Face recognition software is based on accuracy to recognized and measure various characteristics of the face. Each face has several distinct landmarks, varying peaks, and valleys that make up facial features. These marks are called nodal points. The human face has around 80 nodal points, including:

  • Distance between eyes
  • Width of nose
  • Depth of eye sockets
  • Length of jawline
  • Shape of cheekbones

How do facial recognition readers work?

Biometric technology is not exactly new to the market; therefore, fingerprint and hand readers have been around for many years. What is new is the use of facial landmarks for verification. These facial landmarks are used in the verification process to confirm the identity of a person. In the process of verifying, the computer analyzes the facial image captured to the image it has in its database.

The recognition algorithm is divided into two methods photometric and geometric.
The geometric method targets distinguished landmarks, whereas the photometric method is a statistical approach that analyzes image into value and then compares the value with templates to remove variances. Mostly all recognition software includes elastic bunch graph matching, linear discriminate analysis, principal component, hidden Markov model, and dynamic link matching.

Biometric Facial Recognition

Biometric facial recognition uses skin biometrics i.e., the uniqueness of skin surface to yield results that are more accurate. This process is called Surface Texture Analysis. In this method, a picture of a patch of the skin is taken, which is called skin print. The skin print is subdivided into smaller sections and uses the algorithm; the patch is converted into a mathematical space that can identify any lines, pores, and the actual texture of the skin.

While enrolling in facial recognition programs, various snapshots are taken from various angles to avoid any confusion. Some security practices are also followed to prevent the use of masks or pictures. A feature called thermography is also used to record heat in the face. Another new technique of facial recognition targets skin texture, its analysis lines, patterns, spots, etc. These advanced techniques and norms are generally used for high-security areas.

Conclusion

There are various uses of facial landmarks for surveillance purposes for searching for missing persons. Face recognition software is the most widely and popularly used in personal computers. This technology helps you to make your face as your password; it gives touchless and fast login to your PC, and it takes away the hassle of memorizing the password.
