Dumbbells are among the most popular fitness equipment. You will see the dumbbell rack filled with people at the gym. Naturally, those who are trying to create their own home gyms are probably considering buying a few of these themselves. However, there are alternatives that are also worth considering. One of these is the TRX system which is composed of bands that are hooked on a ceiling or wall mount. Below are some of the main differences between dumbbells and TRX band workouts:

Resistance Source

Dumbbells get their weights from the plates at both ends of the handles. These are clearly marked so you only need to pick and choose the plates according to the amount you wish to lift. It’s best to maintain balanced loading. As for the TRX, the weight is provided by the users themselves. Their bodyweight as pulled by gravity in a downward direction is an excellent source of resistance while the straps merely provide support throughout the movements.

Portability

Since you actually need to put on the weights to each dumbbell, they can be pretty heavy to carry. Even small ones would add lots of bulk and load on a backpack so they are quite impractical to carry around when traveling. In contrast, the TRX bands are just flat traps of nylon. You can fold them up and take them with you on vacation. They are easy to mount for indoor or outdoor workouts.

Adjustability

The lightest weight plates are about one pound. Dumbbells can be as heavy as you want by stacking plates but safety dictates caution. Even 20-lb ones can feel substantial for a beginner. As for the TRX, users can vary the load by adjusting their position with respect to the ground and the mount. It will be harder if their bodies are more horizontal and if they are closer to the anchor point.

Core Engagement

Dumbbells will focus on a muscle group with each exercise, although surrounding muscles may also benefit. For example, bicep curls will have the biggest effect in the biceps but the triceps and forearms will be working as well. It’s the same thing for TRX bands which can mimic common dumbbell exercises. The difference is that TRX ensures better development for the core as this area needs to be engaged for stability.

Equipment Cost

If we compare the cost of this equipment, then you will find that dumbbells are relatively more expensive because of all the plates that you need to modify the load. The TRX band workouts have a fixed cost that is much lower.
