Hockey uniforms are designed to help identify a particular team in this fast-paced sport that is often played on an ice rink, although there are other ways to play this game. These uniforms typically consist of a helmet, a jersey, gloves, socks, and hockey pants. Each team has their look to unify their image. The image any hockey team presents through their uniform has to be identical to each member of that team. As such, the entire uniform is designed to match the team’s colors. It goes on to include a number that is individual to a given player. There are, of course, other elements incorporated on the jerseys, such as the team logo. Often, the individual player’s name is written on the back of the jersey, just below the nape of the neck, centered between the player’s shoulders.

As for the goalies, they also need their specialized gloves, masks, and goalie pads to complete the look. In many cases, goalies are required to have their equipment match the rest of the team’s, but that is not etched in stone, as many goalies do find ways to personalize their look. Whatever the case, most teams require two sweater designs — one for the home games, and one for the games played away. Typically, one has a light colour base, and the other is the opposite, or has a dark color base.

Professional teams use very high-quality fabrics in the production of their uniforms. However, cheaper versions use lower-quality materials and are often referred to as replica quality sweaters. As such, in an effort to save money, amateur teams typically choose the lower-quality sweaters. That said, such sweaters, although they may not be used for professional teams, are not likely to fall apart during a single season. Much of the difference lies in a loop that has been sewn in place that enables the jersey to be secured to the pants so that it cannot be pulled over a player’s head if he is engaged in a fight. This loop is called either a tiedown or a fight strap. However, there are other differences between the professional and replica versions, with the latter using cheaper production methods as well.

Having said all that, for an amateur team, replica sweaters are made well enough to address their needs. However, within that realm, it is imperative for team leaders to find manufacturers that do not skimp on the important elements of a quality hockey uniform, as there are differences among them. Sometimes, paying a little bit more for better quality saves more money in the long run.
